How to Apply Epoxy Flooring Over Tiles: Site Checks and Limits

Learn when epoxy flooring over tiles may be feasible and why tile adhesion, contamination, movement, moisture and a compatible primer must be checked.

Can Existing Tiles Remain?

Applying epoxy flooring over tiles is a conditional refurbishment option, not a standard shortcut. The existing tile assembly must be assessed for soundness, bond, movement and moisture. Loose, hollow or contaminated areas can undermine the new resin finish. Removing the tiles may be more appropriate than retaining an uncertain base.

Inspect the Entire Assembly

Review the tile finish, bedding, underlying slab, cracks, joints and changes in level. Ask whether there are previous water or adhesion problems. An apparently clean tile face does not establish that the assembly can support a bonded coating. Use investigation and tests appropriate to the proposed system.

Preparation Must Be System-Specific

Cleaning and mechanical preparation need a method that suits the tile surface and resin system. Do not assume every glazed tile accepts the same primer or preparation. Obtain written compatibility guidance and use a representative trial where needed. Dust extraction and segregation belong in the contractor work plan.

Resolve Grout, Movement and Transitions

Grout lines, repaired areas and differing materials may affect the final appearance. A smoothing layer may be needed, but it does not remove active movement. Keep required joints functional and detail thresholds, drains and floor-height changes. A thicker resin layer alone does not stabilise loose tiles.

Application and Acceptance

After the substrate is accepted, follow the approved primer, repair and resin sequence with stated mixing and curing requirements. Inspect adhesion and finish using agreed criteria before reopening. For a commercial building in India, send Resin Kraft photographs, tile history and operating needs before assuming coating over tiles is suitable.

FAQ

Common Questions

Can epoxy be poured straight onto glazed tiles?

Do not assume so. Assess the assembly and follow an approved preparation and primer specification.

Can hollow tiles remain under epoxy?

They need assessment and appropriate removal or repair; resin does not restore the tile bond automatically.

Will grout lines disappear completely?

That depends on preparation and build-up; review a sample rather than promising an invisible grid.

Can epoxy bridge a moving tile joint?

Required movement joints need an appropriate detail rather than rigid bridging.

Is removal sometimes the better choice?

Yes, especially where bond, contamination, moisture or movement makes retention unreliable.

What information helps assess this flooring choice?

Share the facility location, area, photographs, existing surface, operating traffic, cleaning and exposure details.

Should the substrate be checked before deciding?

Yes. Soundness, moisture, contamination and movement can change the suitable system and repair scope.

What belongs in a written proposal?

Define preparation, repairs, product system, thickness, interfaces, area, taxes, exclusions and handover conditions.

Is curing time the same for every project?

No. Follow the selected system and actual site conditions for each intended return-to-service stage.

How can Resin Kraft review the project?

Send the operating requirements and location through the Contact page to discuss assessment and a quotation.
